| Banned Books Week (the last week of
September) celebrates
the freedom to read by emphasizing books that have been the targets of
attempted bannings. Formal and official book banning still occurs in
the
United States, though it is no longer the core of oppression it once
was.
Thus, the majority of the books featured on this site are not banned,
but
rather challenged. A challenge is an attempt to ban or
restrict
materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. Challenged
books
are featured here because a successful book challenge would result in a
successful banning. |
